I research systems that support interaction, expressivity and connection using multidisciplinary techniques.

Over the last decade I’ve contributed to cultural analytics and digital humanities projects in both academia ( Columbia University, University College London, King’s College London, University of the Arts London) and industry (BBC R&D, Snap Inc, IJAD Dance Company).

My personal research uncovers structure in live performance using digital techniques. I analyse patterns between shows to understand how expert performers balance interaction and repetition. Computational analysis of techniques used by performers not only breaks new ground in the study of live performance, but can be applied to conversational agents, voice assistants and interactive entertainment.

The basis for my approach — using repeated speech to create an expressive ‘fingerprint’ — could help build new approaches to text-to-speech, better understand the role of UMMs and ERRRs in speech and explore emotional expression in the voice.
